Digital Marketing Glossary

Social Solutions jargon-bust some of the biggest and confusing words in the digital marketing world.

Digital Marketing

The dictionaries would read some along the lines of "Digital marketing is the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the Internet".

Essentially, nowadays, everyone is online and people search for things, research things and more importantly - buy things online.

Digital marketing is the process of making a business stand out online, so the right customers find you.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

SEO is the process of getting your business shown high up in search engine (like Google) rankings.

The higher up you can 'rank' the more chances you have of having more customers finding you.

This is a process of preparing your website, so search engines can find out what your website offers quickly and easily.

Facebook Advertising

Like the internet as a whole, Facebook is a pretty busy place. Billions of people every month use to stay up-to-date with friends, family, groups, companies and more.

Due to the vast amounts of data Facebook has collected over the years (cough cough), it's a fantastic tool to bring your brand front-of-mind and directly in front of the right audience.

Social Solutions has demonstrated clear and very profitable ROI for many of our clients through Facebook Advertising. See here for more information on Facebook advertising

Adwords (Google Adwords)

Unlike Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - which takes time, using Google's Adwords - a form of PPC (see below), you can promote your business' website at the top of the search engines results - so potential customers see you quickly.

Google then charges you per 'click', hence Pay Per Click (PPC), so you only pay for the traffic you receive!

Analytics (or Google Analytics)

A platform which allows the website owner (or agency - like us!) to access the data your website presents.

This has many forms, but the key insights are things like:
  • Number of website visitors
  • Average time spent on website
  • Most popular pages
You get the idea. The more data you can get (and understand), the better you can help people to navigate your site.

Google My Business

One of the most important Online Directories out there at the moment.

Google My Business is essentially your own mini-website. You can upload photos, information and other details - which helps other searching the web - find your business.

We can help your business create these for you - contact us for more information.

Landing Page

This can be a stand-alone website, or page on your existing website, which has been specifically created to capture 'leads'.

Essentially, you are trying to capture people's information - so you can use their information to provide a service (typically one which they've just signed up for!).

They are a brilliant use of web forms, which help create a professional look to a campaign.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

A form of online advertising where you have search engines place an advert for your website amongst the search results.

The aim to show your advert in search results relevant to your industry.

For example, if you are a painter, and someone in your city searches for 'painters near me' - your advert should show up in the search results.

If they think it's relevant - they will click on your ad link (to which, you will pay the search engine for).
